Child Support Guidelines In Minnesota

Since January 1, 2007, Minnesota child support guidelines determine support amounts using all of the following:

  •  The gross income of both parents
  •  The number of children the parents have together
  •  The cost of medical insurance

The guidelines address 3 types of support: basic, medical, and child care support (daycare_.

The State of Minnesota has put together a very good online child support calculator  Child Support Guidelines Calculator.  While not perfect, it can give a very accurate estimate of the amount of child support the court may order in your case.

Gross Monthly Income

Gross income consists of the following:

  •  salary and wages
  •  commissions
  •  spousal maintenance
  •  potential income
  •  workers’ compensation
  • unemployment insurance
  • military retirement
  • pension and disability payments
  • Social Security benefits received by a parent based on the parent’s own eligibility
  •  Social Security benefits paid for a joint child based on a parent’s eligibility
  • income from self-employment or operation of a business

Gross income does not include

  • Overtime (unless it is required for work)
  • Child support received for other children
  • Spouse or significant other's income
  • Public Assistance
  • Child Support paid
  • Spousal Maintenance paid
